Discovery of 1730 Rag Wallpaper

A large area of Rag Wallpaper in the Hall, Landings and Stairs.

The recent uncovering of 1730 rag wallpaper in the hall landing and stairs has provided a fascinating glimpse into the past. This historic wallpaper was found beneath multiple layers of distemper, wallpaper skim coats of plaster, and additional layers of paint.


Condition and Preservation

The wallpaper's condition was notably preserved despite being covered for centuries. The layers of distemper and plaster acted as protective barriers, allowing the intricate designs and textures of the rag wallpaper to endure the test of time.


Historical Significance

This discovery not only sheds light on the decorative practices of the 18th century but also offers insights into the materials and techniques used in home interiors during that period.


In addition to the paper, scratch writing by two hands say "Papered by ?? of Dundee 173?. Using the edited images and Ai we think the date is either 1731 or 1732
